What is polished concrete?

Polished concrete is a process of grinding and polishing the surface of concrete to create a smooth, reflective surface. This process can reveal the natural beauty of the concrete and create a durable, low-maintenance flooring option.

Benefits of Polished Concrete

Polished concrete offers several benefits, including:

  • Durability: A polished concrete floor is highly durable and can withstand high foot traffic and machinery.
  • Low maintenance: Polished concrete is easy to clean and maintain, making it a cost-effective flooring option.
  • Aesthetics: Polished concrete can reveal the natural beauty of the concrete and can be stained or colored to create a unique, decorative surface.
  • Sustainability: A polished concrete floor is an eco-friendly option as it does not require the use of adhesives or coatings, and it can help to reduce the amount of energy used for lighting due to its high light reflectivity.

How is polished concrete created?

The process of polishing concrete involves grinding the surface of the concrete with progressively finer diamond-abrasive tools.

This process removes surface imperfections and reveals the natural aggregate in the concrete.

After grinding, the surface is polished using progressively finer diamond polishing pads and grouting any cracks and fine holes.

The final step involves applying a concrete densifier and finisher to the surface to improve the durability and stain resistance of the concrete.

Option 1

FULL MECHANICAL POLISH

Looking for a high-end modern look? Polished concrete floors are an option you should be looking at. Polished, high gloss floors are extremely hard-wearing, easy to clean and can be used in a wide range of areas throughout your home. Concrete polishing floors provide an earthy feel and a seamless floor that looks fantastic throughout your house interiors.

Polished concrete is also super popular in commercial and industrial projects as it offers the hardest wearing flooring option in the industry that is easy to keep clean. Correctly finished polished concrete is not only attractive but is also highly flexible with a wide range of styles and finishes.

HOW THE FULL MECHANICAL POLISHING SYSTEM WORKS:

Polished concrete surfaces undergo the most mechanical refinement and are considered the highest quality concrete flooring solution. The polished concrete process incorporates grouting and chemical hardeners, commonly called ‘densifiers’, to improve the durability and appearance of the floor.

As with the other types of concrete, polished concrete can be tailored to suit any design, with the aggregate exposure and sheen of the floor varied as desired. Polished concrete is an extremely popular choice for indoor applications, as it is, also hygienic, stain-resistant and dust-free.

Mechanical polished concrete is typically only used on indoor concrete– it is the true form of polished concrete as it is the concrete itself that is polished and buffed until it shines – there is no topical coating and therefore there is nothing to wear away over time, and it will last you many years.

With floors that are mechanically polished, concrete slabs are hardened and densified to up to 10 times its natural strength so it is much less likely to crack. The concrete is also grouted, which is a process that fills in the small pinholes and cracks on the surface, leaving the top smooth and very refined – so if you run your finger across the floor it looks and feels like glass. Then the floor undergoes a series of polishes using resins which make the floor smooth, shiny and glossy. You can finish the procedure after just a few polishes so that you end up with a matte finish – or you can continue to polish up to a very high grit for the semi or high gloss finish.

Generally speaking, true mechanically polished concrete flooring projects will cost more than a honed concrete but is a more cost-effective flooring solution in the long run as it never requires a recoating.

When done correctly a mechanical concrete polishing will last a lifetime with proper care. The only maintenance required with mechanically polished concrete is a rebuff every 10-15 years if it has dulled. The rebuffing will bring back the gloss on the floor.

Option 2

HONED CONCRETE

Looking for a polished concrete floor look but not as keen on the cost?  Honed concrete could be the perfect solution for you.  Honing & sealing your concrete floors is the more economical option that creates a gloss finish that is easy to clean, look like polished concrete and is easy to re-coat down the track.

Honing concrete is also a fantastic option in the commercial flooring environment for those looking for the polished concrete look but is on a budget.  With honed & sealed concrete floors, you can create a matt/satin or gloss finish that is easy to clean, looks like polished concrete and is easy to re-coat when required.

A honed concrete floor can offer a beautiful, long-lasting surface that requires minimal maintenance. To create one, you’ll need to hone the concrete with specialized diamond grinding equipment. This method removes any blemishes or imperfections in the slab and creates a smooth, uniform surface. Once the honed concrete polishing is complete, you can apply a sealant to protect the concrete from dirt, moisture, and other damage. After it dries completely, your hone and sealed concrete floor will be ready to use! With proper care and maintenance, your hone and sealed concrete floor should last for years to come.

The major benefits of honed concrete floors include their durability, low maintenance costs, and attractive finish. They are resistant to staining, scratching, and wear and tear, making them an ideal choice for high-traffic areas like retail stores or restaurants. Additionally, honed concrete floors don’t require special cleaning as carpets do. Not only will this save you money in the long run but it also eliminates the need for harsh chemicals that can be damaging to the environment. These advantages make honed concrete floors a great choice for any space!

HOW THE HONE & SEAL SYSTEM WORKS:

The main difference between honed concrete and a mechanically polish concrete slab is the densifiers added to a polished floor to strengthen its durability, polishing capability and lifespan.

A sealed concrete floor is protected with a coating system, whereas a mechanical polished concrete floor has densifiers added to the floor to harden the cement paste and provide a tight surface to be polished.

As a sealed concrete floor has a coating applied over the top of the concrete it can scratch and damage more easily in high foot traffic areas. Sealed concrete will require re-coating every 5-7 years depending on traffic and sealer product used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, existing concrete (as opposed to a new build) can be polished as long as it is in good condition and the surface is smooth and level. The process of polishing existing concrete involves grinding and polishing the surface to remove imperfections and reveal the natural aggregate in the concrete.

No – we treat the existing concrete surface.  We cannot control the colour or amount of stone in the concrete floor.  The aggregate (stones) is added and mixed at the concrete suppliers batching plant. If certain aggregates are required, it is best to consult us early in the design process so we can help choose the most suitable finish.

We patch and grout up any holes, cracks or imperfections in the concrete floor during the polishing process so that it all blends in nicely with the rest of the floor. As concrete can move and cracks can appear in the future, for a small fee we utilise the same method to repair and fill any cracks, providing a seamless floor.

We can carry out an ‘Industrial Finish’ where we don’t expose the aggregate in your concrete floor. There are several important requirements to ensure we can achieve this finish so it’s best to contact us for this advice prior to installing the concrete.
